Credit Cards
Many of the credit card companies warn you about going into debt and paying a great deal of money in interest and other fees. There is some truth to this but these amounts will vary based on the amount of money you charged on your credit cards. You may rack up a lot of debt and destroy your credit. You can also learn to use your credit cards in a responsible manner and use them to help you save and earn money.
There are two basic rules to follow to stay out of debt: charge only what you can afford and pay off your balance in full every single month.
Transfer a balance to a credit card that has a lower interest rate.
If you have a balance on your credit card and the interest rate is high you can save a lot of money by transferring this balance to a card with a lower interest rate. Take advantage of the 0% APR and you can save money. You may even be able to go 21 months without paying interest fees. You can save $400 if you have a $3,000 balance by switching to a card with 0% APR for 12 months. You can save this if you are able to pay $251 on the bill each month.
Use the 0% APR for Large Purchases
Some cards have this as an introductory offer as well. If you want to purchase a large item such as furniture or a vacation using a card with 0% APR can help you save money.
Pay with cash back credit cards.
Credit cards that offer cash back will allow you to build up rewards on the items you purchase.
If you use your credit card to pay for just about everything you can max out the cash back rewards. If you spend $3,000 a month paying bills you can get $360 a year on the card even if it only pays 1% on rewards.
Sign on Bonuses
There are over two dozen credit cards that offer sign on bonuses. This can be anything from cash back to free stays at hotels and even free airline tickets. You may need to spend a specific amount on each card in the first couple of months to get these rewards.
Pass on the Car Rental Insurance
When you rent a car you can get insurance coverage from the agency at a price of $20 a day. This comes out to $140 a week.
Many credit card companies have rental insurance if you decline the coverage offered by the Rental Company and pay for the card using your credit card.
Benefits for Warranties
You may be tempted to get the extended warranty on electronics but may not want to spend the extra money. If you use the correct credit card you will automatically get the extended warranty. Before shopping check out the policy the credit card has on extended warranties. Be sure to keep the receipt so you can submit a product claim if needed.
Do Not Pay foreign Transaction Charges
Many companies charge 3$ per foreign transaction. If you are planning to travel internationally these fees will add up. Capital One will waive the fee for their credit cards. This is the best card to use when traveling internationally.
